Demetrius was still in mourning
As the inspector come to the door
His timing was impeccable
He turned up at bang on four.
Chalky was in the kitchen
Demetrius called him through
He wanted his friend to hear the Inspector
A man he hardly even knew.
The Inspector gave his respects
Demetrius knew he had cared
Sometimes he wondered what would have been
If his Mothers life had been shared.
Demetrius was still sad
At the mention of his Mother
He loved this woman so much
Like he had not loved any other.
The Inspector sat down on the chair
Unbuckling his long black coat
He should have retired years ago
But the system got his goat.
He felt the department would miss him
He couldn't face anything new
The fact he was still old fashioned
Was surprising to just a few.
Chalky brought through coffees
And handed one to the men
The Inspector stared at Demetrius
Trying to think of him back then.
